Senior Learning Designers at Strayer University play an integral role in the design and development of learning experiences for students who are seeking to advance their lives professionally and personally. They are thought leaders who partner with stakeholders across the organization to develop cutting-edge courses and programs that provides a real return on investment for students. They are student focused and leverage a wide array of research-based practices, instructional strategies, and technology in order to deliver engaging, relevant, and scaffolded learning experiences. In addition, they are data-driven, creative, out-of-the-box thinkers who are well-versed in instructional design methodologies and have a passion for education.

About the Role

As a Senior Learning Designer, you will be responsible for exploring, defining, and constructing quality learning experiences that are aligned, relevant, and deliver a seamless student experience. You will leverage expertise in curriculum development, adult learning, and instructional design methodologies to create highly-engaging learning solutions. You will contribute to the larger learning experience design roadmap and planning to ensure Strayer students are successful in their courses. You will also mentor learning design team members and participate in the creation and refinement of learning and assessment standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive and thoughtful analysis of user needs, competitive and market trends, and historical course performance to draw out key insights and make targeted recommendations.

  • Outline requirements needed to improve outcomes and student experience.

  • Work through a creative, iterative, design process to create career relevant courses that directly tie to the university’s core competencies.

  • Partner with subject matter experts, faculty and key stakeholders to design and develop courses.

  • Write industry relevant learning outcomes and objectives, activities, assessments, and align all of these together and with program level outcomes.

  • Share and showcase relevant background information, design decisions, course structure, and teaching and learning best practices for new products to various stakeholders.Serve as the lead on complex design projects.

  • Make recommendations to broad audiences that reflect a sound and well-constructed learning solution.

  • Participate in the design and assessment standards and participate in the rollout and training of new approaches.

  • Design and develop courses using story-driven approaches and other active learning strategies.

  • Use data to inform decision-making and create buy-in.

  • Write well-aligned and descriptive assessments and rubrics.

  • Incorporate multimedia concepts in course design.

  • Communicate best practices of curriculum design with faculty and other key stakeholders.

  • Communicate status of learning projects to key stakeholders.

  • Maintain calendar and milestones of projects.

  • Highlight areas for improvements, perform quality control on existing materials, and propose instructional interventions to improve student experience and learning.

  • Engage in continuous improvement by participating in professional development and following our projects to hone design sense.

  • Mentor, train, and support other learning designers.

  • Explore the larger program and student life-cycle experience from an instructional design view and make recommendations.

  • Implements design thinking approaches to enhance the user experience of our courses and to improve the overall course design process.

  • Defines standards and processes for designing and developing curriculum in efficient and meaningful ways

  • Other responsibilities as assigned


  • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution required

Work Experience

  • At least five to seven years of prior related work experience (e.g. designing unique and creative learning experiences)

Job Skills

  • Applying learning theories to the practice of online and onground course design and development;

  • Project management (e.g. managing time, establishing priorities, distributing responsibilities, meeting milestones and deliverables);

  • Familiarity with current learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard; Canvas; Moodle)

  • Ability to take complex information and make it understandable for a wide range of audiences.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Maintains in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of the workplace learning and performance field.

  • Proven skills with instructional design methodologies (e.g. ADDIE, SAM).

  • Test new technologies and strategies in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

  • Eager to learn, grow, and to contribute to a dynamic team.

  • Must be able to work independently with little supervision, as well as in a team.

  • Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain. Effectively cope with stressful situations.

  • Strong mental acuity.
