Software Engineer – Media Diagnostics & Debugging

Team Red Dog - Redmond, WA, United States

Team Red Dog is looking for a Software Engineer – Media Diagnostics & Debugging to support a Fortune 100 technology leader on a high-impact initiative focused on improving developer experience across the Windows media and graphics ecosystem. This remote role is ideal for systems engineers with strong debugging instincts who want to prevent bugs before they happen by building validation layers, diagnostics, and developer-facing tooling that makes media failures obvious, actionable, and easy to resolve.

Top Required Skills (Must Haves):

  1. Systems-level debugging and diagnostics engineering experience working with low-level, performance-sensitive software such as media pipelines, graphics systems, runtimes, or OS components, including designing runtime checks and analyzing complex failures.
  2. Developer-facing diagnostic tooling and validation experience building debug layers, validation logic, error messaging, logging, or tracing that helps developers catch incorrect API usage or configuration issues early.
  3. Strong technical communication skills with the ability to translate recurring bug patterns into structured diagnostics, validation rules, and clear developer guidance that reduces low-quality bug submissions.

Opportunity Overview:
This role sits at the intersection of media systems engineering and developer experience. The team’s mission is to dramatically reduce avoidable media bugs by improving debuggability, diagnostics, and validation tooling—similar in spirit to the Direct3D debug layer. Instead of reacting to issues after they surface, this work enables developers to self-diagnose problems early, improving ecosystem health and freeing platform teams from reactive bug triage.

How you will make an impact:
• Design and implement media-specific validation layers, diagnostics, and runtime checks
• Identify common media and codec misuse patterns and surface clear warnings, errors, and guidance
• Improve diagnostic logging, traceability, and developer-facing error messages across media pipelines
• Collaborate with Media, Graphics, and developer support teams to understand recurring bug categories
• Create developer-friendly debugging guidance, examples, and recommended workflows
• Validate tooling against real-world applications, drivers, and reproduction scenarios
• Measure success through reduced bug volume, faster resolution times, and higher-quality incoming issues

The expertise you bring:
• 4–6 years of experience in systems-level or performance-sensitive software engineering
• Strong background in debugging low-level components such as media pipelines, graphics subsystems, runtimes, or OS-level services
• Experience designing validation logic, debug layers, diagnostics, logging, or tracing tools
• Ability to translate low-level failures into clear, actionable developer feedback
• Comfort working cross-functionally with platform engineers and developer support teams
• Strong written communication skills for developer-facing documentation and guidance

What makes a candidate highly successful in this role:
Successful candidates enjoy preventing bugs rather than triaging them. They think in terms of ecosystem health, identify patterns across many issues, and convert those insights into preventative tooling. They are proactive, detail-oriented, and motivated by high-leverage improvements where small changes save hundreds of hours of downstream effort. They validate their work with real developers and prioritize diagnostics that are genuinely useful in practice.
