Top Required Skills (Must Haves):

  • 2+ years of experience using Markdown to create, format, and structure documentation for knowledge bases and troubleshooting guides.
  • 2+ years of experience using Microsoft Excel to manage and analyze documentation workflows, metadata, and data-driven reports.
  • 2+ years of experience using Microsoft Word to draft, edit, and format technical content, ensuring consistency and clarity.

Opportunity Overview:

As part of the Global Experiences (GXP) group, this team is responsible for developing documentation that supports law enforcement agencies and digital investigation teams. The Technical Writer will work closely with engineers and technical specialists to translate complex troubleshooting conversations into structured, self-service guides. This documentation will enable Microsoft engineers and external stakeholders to efficiently navigate critical systems.

This role provides a unique opportunity to work on Microsoft Places, a new product shaping the future of hybrid work. You'll be at the intersection of technology, cybersecurity, and investigative research, developing guides that help protect Microsoft customers from digital threats.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with software engineers and technical teams to document troubleshooting steps, FAQs, and best practices.
  • Convert technical conversations, transcripts, and engineering notes into concise, user-friendly knowledge base articles.
  • Ensure documentation is accurate, well-structured, and up to date, following industry standards and internal guidelines.
  • Edit and refine existing content to improve clarity, usability, and technical accuracy.
  • Work with support teams to identify recurring technical issues and proactively develop troubleshooting content.
  • Use Markdown and documentation tools to create structured, easy-to-navigate content.
  • Conduct research and interviews with subject matter experts to ensure accuracy and completeness of technical documentation.
  • Maintain documentation in version control systems (e.g., Git) and follow Agile documentation practices.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • 2-4 years of experience in technical writing, preferably in a software development, cybersecurity, or investigative technology environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree required (preferably in Technical Writing, Communication, Computer Science, or a related field). Master’s degree in Technical Communication is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to break down technical concepts for various audiences.
  • Experience using Markdown editors to structure and publish content efficiently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Confluence for drafting, formatting, and managing documentation.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity, investigative research, or law enforcement systems is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work independently in a hybrid work environment (50% onsite in Redmond, WA).
