Software Development Engineer 1

Team Red Dog - Redmond, WA, United States

Team Red Dog looking for a Software Development Engineer 1 to support a leading cloud and software provider client. This early-career systems-focused software engineer will contribute to an open-source, cloud-native operating system initiative within Azure. This fully remote role offers hands-on experience in systems programming, AI-assisted developer tooling, CI/CD automation, and large-scale open-source collaboration—ideal for candidates eager to build low-level software that powers modern cloud infrastructure.

Top Required Skills (Must Haves):

  1. Rust and Python development – contributing to systems-level codebases, automation, and tooling within an open-source OS environment.
  2. GitHub and distributed version control – submitting pull requests, participating in code reviews, and collaborating with a geo-distributed engineering community.
  3. General software development practices – testing, CI/CD pipelines, and maintaining high code quality in a production-grade research environment.

Opportunity Overview:
This role sits at the intersection of systems research and modern AI-powered software engineering. You’ll contribute to a lightweight, home-grown operating system designed for specialized Azure use cases, comparable to technologies like AWS Firecracker. The work is entirely open source and emphasizes innovation in developer productivity, automation, and scalable collaboration.

How you will make an impact:

  • Design and implement AI-assisted workflows for code review, testing, and documentation across multiple repositories.
  • Improve developer experience through automation, onboarding tooling, and standardized contribution workflows.
  • Enhance CI/CD pipelines with intelligent test selection, failure analysis, and regression detection.
  • Build automation and tooling that supports a growing ecosystem of system components and libraries.
  • Collaborate closely with researchers, systems engineers, and product partners across teams.

The expertise you bring:

  • 1–2 years of experience in software development or systems programming.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience working with low-level or systems-focused codebases rather than web, frontend, or traditional backend development.
  • Familiarity with operating systems concepts and the full software development lifecycle.

What makes a candidate highly successful in this role:
Strong candidates demonstrate hands-on experience with Rust, comfort collaborating in open-source environments, and clear communication when working through pull requests and code reviews. A public GitHub profile showing recent contributions, curiosity about systems design, and an interest in AI-enabled developer tooling will help candidates stand out.
