Our client, a manufacturer and distributor of medical equipment, is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Engineering to lead all engineering initiatives .

This role partners closely with Product Management and cross-functional leadership to drive cost optimization, product quality, delivery performance, safety, and line extensions. The Director of Engineering will oversee a high-performing engineering team and manage complex, cross-functional programs from concept through production and launch.

The ideal candidate brings strong leadership, technical depth, project management expertise, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, global environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, conduct, and direct engineering initiatives for all North American products related to Quality, Delivery, Cost, and Line Extensions
  • Oversee product improvements and provide technical engineering support as needed
  • Participate in design transfer activities into production when required
  • Provide manufacturing and field support, including investigation of Class A returns
  • Lead surveillance and management of potential or confirmed product safety issues
  • Lead cross-functional, phase-gated projects from feasibility through launch
  • Take full accountability for project scope, timing, budget, and successful execution
  • Apply strong problem-solving and decision-making skills to address short-term field quality and shop-floor issues
  • Manage engineering change notices (ECNs), customer special orders, and immediate technical issues while balancing limited resources
  • Partner with Product Management to support business objectives for assigned product categories, including annual cost-reduction targets, value analysis, and line extensions
  • Lead end-to-end cost optimization initiatives across the product portfolio
  • Manage and maintain an active pipeline of cost-reduction and continuous improvement projects
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Supply Chain, and Engineering teams to evaluate competitive products and identify cost and design opportunities
  • Supervise and develop a high-performing engineering team consisting of engineers, designers, and drafters
  • Coach team members on project management fundamentals, including task dependencies, timelines, and execution discipline
  • Create a culture of continuous improvement, risk awareness, accountability, and speed to execution
  • Evaluate staffing needs, manage hiring and promotions, and develop team capabilities to meet business goals
  • Ensure required training is identified and completed for all direct reports
  • Foster an inclusive team environment that values diversity and leverages individual strengths
  • Ensure all product development processes comply with company quality systems
  • In collaboration with QA/RA, proactively ensure compliance with domestic and international safety and quality standards
  • Manage the engineering budget for the assigned control center
  • Effectively interface with internal and external stakeholders, including managing complex or sensitive issues to achieve desired outcomes

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
  • 10–15 years of progressive engineering leadership or project engineering experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and structural design and analysis and/or electronics, as applicable
  • Demonstrated success leading multiple complex projects from feasibility through launch
  • Proven experience managing cross-functional teams with minimal supervision
  • Strong New Product Development (NPD) expertise
  • In-depth understanding of product engineering and manufacturing processes
  • Ability to contribute to broader business strategy development
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Proven ability to supervise, mentor, and develop engineering staff
