Director, Legal & Compliance Counsel

Thomas Brooke International - Cleveland, OH

The Opportunity

Cleveland area Fortune 1000 Holding Company/Manufacturer

This is an exciting, newly-created position with a high level of autonomy and responsibility for vitally important initiatives in a complex and sometimes uncertain environment.

Top priority: you will bring high-level data protection expertise to provide guidance and leadership to the company-wide data privacy initiative, to ensure that the necessary policies and practices are in place and being actively implemented. In addition, you’ll be responsible for drafting company policies, managing the legal aspects of the Company’s trade compliance policy; and for legal oversight of compliance matters, including investigations. Most of your time will be on these initiatives. You are expected to also have some involvement in contracts and litigation, and assist with tracking and responding to environmental, social and governance rating organizations.

The Company is comprised of multiple discrete operating businesses organized into Groups. You will work closely with lead lawyers and business leaders at each Group, the GDPR specialist in Europe, a trade regulation specialist, as well as corporate IT; and leverage outside counsel as needed. You’ll build relationships to generate action by influence across functions and businesses, but without direct reporting responsibility.

As the Company continues to transform from a highly-decentralized to a center-led structure, the small corporate team will continue to expand and offer great long-term career opportunities. This is NOT the job for you if you are looking to manage a large team or receive regular title-level promotions – but if you enjoy a broad base of work, embrace the journey of making your own way in a new role, and thrive by bringing order to areas needing focus by building strong relationships rather than a command-and-control structure, you’ll find this an immensely satisfying reason to get up and go to work every day.
