R&D Chemist

The Opportunity:

  • Lead future R&D activities to expand existing high performance product portfolio, maintain and enhance the Company’s position as an innovator

Specific Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Become expert in the Company’s current technologies, formulations and applications
  • Lead transfer of technology from outgoing (retiring) research scientist to new in-house lab
  • Play central role in design and installation of the new R&D lab
  • Bring best-in-class R&D methods and processes to support the culture of excellence, including recommendations for software, equipment and other resources
  • Collaborate with Technical & Manufacturing team members to ensure successful scale-up, launch and commercialization of new products and with Communications team to convey market-facing information regarding new products at the appropriate time
  • Hire & train technician to support your work
  • Develop a sustainable and elegant R&D process to support ongoing new product development
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, regulatory changes and potential market opportunities


The Profile:

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science or similar is REQUIRED.
  • 5+ years industrial (i.e. non academic) experience successfully developing and commercializing high-performance liquid coatings is REQUIRED, including both solvent-borne & waterborne products; you have a good understanding of the full lifecycle of new product development
  • Experience with coatings for metal substrates strongly preferred
  • Solid understanding of structure-property relationships as this pertains to coatings
  • Comfortable with DoE and statistical analysis tools and methodologies such as DFSS
  • Experience designing/starting up a new R&D lab very helpful
  • Excellent written and oral communications and presentation skills are essential – you’re comfortable communicating your progress and results to both technical and non-technical audiences internally and externally
  • Adaptable, flexible, comfortable in a small company or startup type environment with a “Do what it takes” attitude
  • Strong project management skills - you enjoy spearheading initiatives and taking ownership of projects to drive them to a successful conclusion
  • You always strive for excellence in your work, both the content and the process
  • Cheerful, friendly and collaborative disposition
  • Local to the Boston area or willing to relocate

Compensation: $120k depending on experience
