Cell Test Engineer

Job Summary:

The Battery Cell Test Engineer will work under the direction of senior technical staff, conducting electrical, environmental, and abuse testing on lithium-ion cells in support of R&D and cell product development work. Data will be worked up and reported to internal and external customers. Both -made and commercially available cells will be tested. The Cell Test Engineer will manage work conducted at outside test labs.

The Test Engineer will take ownership of cell testing equipment and testing lab areas and ensure that cells are tested in accordance with program test manuals, program schedules and priorities.

Work environment is indoors.

 

Essential/Key Functions:

  • Conduct lithium-ion cell electrical characterization and program/product-specific testing.
  • Conduct environmental and abuse testing on cells.
  • Program and operate automated multichannel cell test equipment.
  • Test data work up, visualization, interpretation and reporting.
  • Assist with maintenance, repair, and upgrades of existing test equipment and selection and installation of new test equipment.
  • Manage cell testing by outside test labs.
  • Develop, write and follow test plan, test manual and standard operating procedures.
  • · Conduct cell destructive physical analyses (tear down and study cell internals).
  • Maintain clean, organized work area.
  • Maintain assigned equipment/assets/properties.
  • Comply with policies and procedures. Follow all safety guidelines and operate in a safe manner.
  • Perform in a manner that will prevent errors and omissions.
  • Provides advisory support and assistance to the department manager as needed.
  • Participate in activities needed to support the management functions of the team.
  • Physical presence on the job is essential and necessary, including weekends and holidays if deemed.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Management Responsibilities:

No direct reports.

 


 

Minimum (Required) Qualifications:

Required Education: Bachelor's or master’s degree in a STEM discipline. Ph.D. Candidates will generally NOT be considered for this position.

Preferred Education: Degrees in electrical engineering, chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science, or materials engineering are preferred.

We are open to other backgrounds with appropriate experience.

Required Experience: Min. 2 years’ experience in conducting battery or cell testing work is required.

Preferred Experience: Lithium-ion battery industry experience is preferred.

Required Skills and Traits:

  • Operation of electrical test equipment.
  • Data analysis and reporting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Moderate skill in programming (Visual Basic, Matlab, Ni Teststand etc.)
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction, and also as part of a small team.
  • Successful candidates will be both quality and detail oriented, be team oriented and flexible. They will possess good interpersonal skills, be good in written and verbal communication and be able to interface with co-workers and management.

 

Preferred Skills and Traits:

  • Familiarity with battery and electrochemical test equipment (Maccor, Bitrode, Arbin, Neware, Solartron, Gamry, Bio-Logic, etc.) programming, operation, methodology, and data analysis is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with battery science and/or engineering.
  • Test plan development and execution.
  • Equipment sourcing, set up, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Design of Experiments (DOE) or Robust Engineering training.
  • Exposure to project management methodology.

 

Senior Cell Test Engineer Requirements: 5 years of battery cell testing industry experience (or equivalent) in a mid-level position, and appropriate track record including above-average performance reviews.

Lead Cell Test Engineer Requirements: min. 10 years of battery cell testing (or equivalent) in a senior-level position and appropriate track record including above-average performance reviews showing high levels of autonomy and (non-managemental) leadership.
