The Opportunity
Are you an experienced HR professional ready to make a significant impact? We're seeking a Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) to be a strategic advisor to our Area Director and leadership team. In this pivotal role, you'll align HR initiatives with the business objectives of our dynamic distribution operations.
You will provide comprehensive HR support to approximately 1,500 employees across multiple shifts and departments, with a critical focus on effectively managing four distinct union relationships. The HRBP will drive talent management, employee relations, performance management, compensation, benefits, and compliance programs, fostering a positive and productive work environment within a fast-paced distribution setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Partnership: Act as a trusted advisor to the Area Director and leadership team on all HR-related matters. You'll contribute to business strategy development and operational decision-making, translating business needs into actionable HR strategies and solutions.
- Union Relations & Labor Management: Serve as the primary HR point of contact for four distinct labor unions. This includes interpreting, administering, and ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), participating in grievance resolution (investigations, hearings, and negotiation up to arbitration preparation), and collaborating with legal counsel on complex union matters. You'll also build and maintain positive relationships with union representatives and members.
- Employee Relations: Provide expert guidance and support to employees and managers on a wide range of issues, including conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, performance improvement plans, and investigations. You'll manage all aspects of leaves of absence (LOA), including FMLA, ADA, and PFL, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and CBAs. Proactively identify and address potential employee relations concerns to mitigate risk.
- Talent Management & Development: Support the recruitment and onboarding of new employees, partner with managers on talent needs, succession planning, and career development. Implement performance management processes (goal setting, reviews, feedback), and identify training needs, collaborating with Learning & Development to deliver programs.
- Compensation & Benefits: Work with corporate HR to administer compensation and benefits programs, ensuring equity, market competitiveness, and adherence to CBA terms. Provide guidance to employees and managers on benefits inquiries and enrollment.
- HR Compliance & Policy: Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, ADA, OSHA). Develop, implement, and communicate HR policies and procedures, maintaining accurate HR records and data.
- Change Management: Support and guide leaders and employees through organizational changes, including restructures, process improvements, and technological implementations.
- HR Metrics & Reporting: Analyze HR data and metrics to identify trends, measure the effectiveness of HR programs, and provide actionable insights to leadership.
- Safety Culture: Partner with operations and safety teams to promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Qualifications:

- 8+ years of progressive HR experience with at least 5 years in an HR Business Partner role supporting a large employee population (1,000+ employees preferred).
- Extensive experience with labor relations and union environments is essential, including direct experience negotiating and administering Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) and managing grievances up to arbitration.
- Proven expertise in employee relations, including conducting complex investigations, managing disciplinary processes, and administering various types of leaves of absence (FMLA, ADA, PFL, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, OSHA, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to act as a strategic advisor to senior leadership, translating business needs into HR solutions.
