Summary:

 

The Director of Design & Engineering plans, organizes and directs the design and engineering activities of the department to meet company objectives for design, installation, product development and improvement of existing product lines by performing the following duties personally or through support staff.

 

The Director of Design & Engineering will work in conjunction with senior management to meet company goals. He or she acts as a liaison between the design department, project management and operations (production).

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Internal Responsibilities:

  • Manages and directs the professional, technical, and support staff of the Design & Engineering Department.

    • Selects, develops, trains and supervises staff.

  • Develop and implement policies, standards and procedures that guide and support function of the department.

  • Manage workflow between designers and drafting personnel.

    • Google Drive - D&E Queue

  • Oversee the proposed design and the engineering subsequent to product (purchases) and production.

    • Reviews and analyzes proposals submitted to determine if benefits derived and possible applications justify expenditures.

    • Work as an internal consultant to finalize project specifications.

    • Take the lead in creative sessions for project kick-off.

    • Selects correct design concepts and fundamental technology used for new products or improvement for existing products.

  • Direct, review, and approve product design and changes.

    • Provide quality control over concept and fabrication drawings.

  • Assist in development of estimates with project team for bid submittals.

  • Oversee and execute design packages with translation of all details in order for the installers and programmer to execute implementation.

    • Generate wiring plans based on scope of project and future needs utilizing AutoCAD software.

    • Create project specific rack elevations details including the calculation of power and thermal management requirements.

    • Manage multiple revisions of drawings based on change orders and as-built documents.

    • Development and maintain custom CAD infrastructure including CAD blocks, AV Control legends and TV detail drawings.

    • Design and maintain AV, Network and Integration signal flow and control diagrams.

  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

  • Working with the manufacturer's, AVS C.T.O. and operations by reviewing and monitoring quality and product improvements and new product deployment.

  • Conduct product research to validate equipment specifications.
  • Ongoing training with industry leading control automation solutions including Crestron, Savant and Lutron.

Special Requirements:

Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for immediate support staff, including providing input on hiring, disciplinary actions and realigning work as needed.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of D-Tools and integration to design software.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD 2008 or greater.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Visio.
  • Design and abilities in the field of audio, video, lighting control and networking systems.
  • Proficient in skills with personal computers, word documents, spreadsheets, and email.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical and general business information.
  • Ability to prepare documentation, specifications, estimates and work schedules.

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:

Computers and related software, plotters/printers, copier, fax machine, telephone and hand drafting equipment.

Education, Certification and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree preferred.
  • 5 years of design experience and advancement in the field of Audio/Video and Networking systems.
  • 3 years of installation experience preferred.
  • Crestron DMC-D 4K Certified.
  • Savant Systems Fundamental and CORE Certified.
  • Control 4 Certified.
  • Supervisory experience required.

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
