A leading harvesting company seeks a Director of Harvest Business to manage the brassica crops (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages) operations. This key role will lead and execute all harvest operations for organic and conventional programs.
The Director will ensure product quality, labor performance, and operational efficiency while managing resources, equipment, and compliance. The position will be instrumental in developing and implementing procedures, developing business with outside customers, managing budgets, achieving financial KPIs.
The role requires a strong business acumen and analytical capacity. A strong understanding of finances, the capability to work with and understand all costs, margins, rates, as well as the ability to generate profitability, are crucial. A strong management background and ability to work with multiple divisions and personnel are needed. Ability to make smart, actionable decisions with personnel, issues, or unforeseen circumstances. This role will be driving the business forward.
Position will travel between the Central Coast, CA and Yuma AZ during each season. Position based in Santa Maria, CA, with relocation assistance available.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead harvest activities for broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and other brassicas. Ensure timely execution aligned with schedules, grower expectations, and quality standards.
- Oversee foremen and harvest crews, ensuring efficient labor deployment, safety, productivity, and compliance with H-2A and labor laws.
- Monitor field conditions, cutting quality, and yield to minimize rejections and maximize product consistency and pack-out results.
- Coordinate labor planning and monitor Cost Per Man Hour (CPMH). Identify and implement strategies for labor cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
- Manage brassica harvest equipment across all sites. Ensure equipment is deployed effectively, maintained regularly, and used to maximize productivity and reduce downtime.
- Ensure all harvesting equipment and tools are properly sanitized and field operations meet food safety and OSHA standards.
- Collaborate with operations, grower relations, compliance, HR, and cooling to align field activities with overall business and customer needs.
- Provide coaching and development to supervisors and foremen. Foster a culture of accountability, consistency, and continuous improvement.
- Track key performance indicators, including CPMH, yield, crew performance, and equipment efficiency. Report insights to senior leadership.
- Travel between Central Coast, CA and Yuma, AZ as needed to oversee seasonal transitions and support regional teams.
- Utilize company supported program to help drive compliance and efficiency
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of leadership experience in vegetable harvest operations, specifically with brassicas.
- Strong background in managing labor, equipment, and H-2A workforce compliance.
- Proven ability to manage equipment performance and field logistics.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel seasonally between CA and AZ.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary Range: $150,000 – $180,000 annually (DOE), bonus is additional
