Labor Relations Manager

ABOUT US: Serrano Search, LLC is a unique executive search firm dedicated to labor relations-related recruitment. We accept search assignments nationally for positions that typically fall into two categories: We help clients hire the best talent in the country when they currently have collective bargaining agreements, and we assist when clients are focused on remaining union-free.

 

This is a hybrid role with 50%+ travel to sites across the United States. 

The ideal candidate will live in the Northeast or Great Lakes Region.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collective Bargaining (60%)

  • Participate in and lead assigned negotiations following protocol as defined by the Director, Labor Relations

  • Conduct research on union-related matters; analyze CBAs to develop interpretation of intent, spirit, and terms of contracts; serve on and represent management in labor contract negotiations

  • Furnish information, such as reference documents and statistical data concerning labor legislation, labor market conditions, prevailing union and management practices, wage and salary surveys, and employee benefits programs, for use in review of current contract provisions and proposed changes

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with operations leadership, employees, and union representatives

  • Administer the Company’s Workforce Continuity Program

Positive Employee Relations - Data Analysis & Training (20%)

  • Proactively support company growth and operational excellence by helping business partners maintain their direct relationships with their employees

  • Utilize the Leadership Index Data and other KPIs in collaboration with HR partners to identify at-risk locations

  • Develop and deliver training programs to empower front-line managers to build employee relationships

  • Provide ongoing employee relations support through the development of training and support programs

  • Respond to union recognition petitions

Project Management, Compliance, Administrative & Reporting Support (15%)

  • Liaise with Shared Services to ensure payroll and HRIS compliance, including CBA analysis, auditing, and other projects as assigned

  • Grievance and litigation tracking

  • Bargaining results tracking and reporting of annual results to HR and Executive Leadership

  • General electronic and paper records maintenance

Daily Investigation and Discipline Review & Training (5%)

  • Review all discipline proposals for union-represented employees

  • Develop and implement training on the subject of how to conduct an investigation.

  • Develop and implement training on how to handle a grievance and provide day-to-day grievance support for the business

  • Oversee resolution of escalated disputes both formal and informal. May act as a resource for employees who raise concerns

REQUIRED:

  • BA/BS (Preferred: JD, PHR, or SPHR certification)

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive and responsible generalist experience in all facets of labor relations with a strong background in employee relations, employment practices, learning and assessment, and compensation administration.

  • Experience as Second Chair negotiating collective bargaining agreements (First Chair bargaining experience preferred)

  • Ability to travel (50%+) to sites located across the United States plus monthly travel to Stamford, CT (Headquarters). Demonstrated success working remotely as well as in on-site office conditions with 50+% travel

  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of the National Labor Relations Act (“NLRA”)

  • Demonstrated experience with union recognition proceedings (elections pursuant to the NLRA, card check agreements, de-certifications, etc.)

  • Demonstrated success working independently managing projects, developing training programs, and implementing business processes

  • Experience working in a multi-state, decentralized company

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present to all levels within the organization

  • Ability to negotiate

  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to consistently track, interpret, and act upon metrics results

  • Strong project management skills

  • Solid technical HR knowledge – NLRA, EEO/AA, FLSA, OSHA, Federal/local laws including prevailing wage

  • P&L familiarity; business acumen

  • Ability to handle multiple demands and manage complex and competing priorities

  • Strong relationship-building and internal consulting skills

  • Ability to collaborate on as well as lead projects

  • Strong computer skills (Tableau, Outlook, MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Workday, HRIS/payroll systems experience)l

PREFERRED:

  • First Chair experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements

  • Experience with Project Labor Agreements, Prevailing Wage Compliance, and the NLRA vis-à-vis the Construction industry is a very strong plus

  • Ideal candidate will live in the Northeast or Great Lakes Region
